We’re delighted to be able to show our support to a local fundraising initiative for a family that has experienced a lack of compassion and integrity, at a really difficult time.
Sarah Brown, a nurse for almost 40 years, re-mortgaged her home so she could extend it and purchase her dream holiday home, but the company she paid upfront to carry out the works disappeared with her money, leaving her unable to finish the extension or buy her holiday home.
In addition to this stressful experience, health investigations at the same time devastatingly confirmed that Sarah had breast cancer and would face months of intensive chemotherapy.
Sarah’s daughter Rebecca Martin-Merchant who with her four-year-old daughter, lives with her mother, was heart-broken at the situation her mother had been left in.
The building company had hardly started the works before disappearing, leaving the family with a ‘mud pit’ in the back garden. With help from friends and family, they have had to scale back their plans for the extension and have managed to build the shell of a ground floor, but living conditions are still far from ideal.
Sarah’s dream for a holiday caravan in Cornwall had been put to the side, at a time when it could really have benefitted her.
Rebecca, who Sarah raised as a single mum, is looking to raise £10,000 to purchase that caravan in Cornwall, where she believes her mother will be able to recuperate and have a better chance to recover from her cancer.
One of the many fundraising activities that Rebecca organised was a raffle with some really amazing prizes, all donated by friends, family and local businesses. Barnes Commercial were pleased to donate a delicious hamper from Cartwright & Butler to help Rebecca reach her goal.
